Ocean Front Education Area
Goals
Re-dedicate beachfront area for marine science education and canoe building and voyaging programs. Includes keeping the existing camp sites for educational camping.
Overview
The area shown in the graphic plan as the “Ocean Front Education Area” is currently a multi-use area that includes camp sites, a commercial kitchen, the caretaker house, DPR administrative offices and a temporary structure set up by HLC as a staging area for outdoor educational activities and for canoe storage.
During the summer, DPR conducts summer programs for children here. In the future, as administrative offices are moved away from this area to temporary or new permanent facilities at the entrance and/or center of the park, this beachfront area should be re-dedicated for educational uses and canoe building/voyaging activities. This area was once the launch site for Hōkūleʻa and should honor her as being from this place and welcome her back when she returns from her voyage around the world (see Section 9 on Priority Projects). The 1992 Kāneʻohe Bay Master Plan called for an increase in canoe related activities at Kualoa to keep this cultural tradition alive.
