Koholalele is an important habitat for native birds and a significant staging area for migrant species during Spring and Fall. The site contains native plants and has an area with designated exceptional kamani trees.

Kualoa overlaps lands from two historically significant ahupua‘a – Hakipu‘u and Kualoa. Both of these ahupua‘a carry important functions dating back hundreds of years prior to foreign contact.

Kualoa is noted historically as a puʻuhonua, a place of refuge, peace and safety. These lands brought together the executive and the advisory parts of society – the ali‘i and kahuna.
