Loʻi Restoration
Goals
Identify ideal area for small-scale loʻi restoration and begin growing kalo together with school groups and community members.
Overview
Archaeological studies have found evidence of taro cultivation on what is now Kualoa Regional Park land. In the northwestern section of the park near Mōliʻi Pond and Koholālele Pond, there are some areas identified in maps as marsh lands. There is some evidence that the type of kalo cultivation practiced in this area was “mound style” as practiced in other Pacific Islands, which is different from the Hawaiian method of creating depressions filled with water.
